Back in late 2006 I finally decided to try the SiteBuildIt! online business-building system for myself. I had no idea whether or not I would achieve any level of financial success with the site, but I thought I would give it a try.
In my professional life I have a great deal of experience with doing business on the web. But when I decided to try the SiteBuildIt! approach, I put aside my professional "hat" and followed the step-by-step site-building and marketing process just like anyone else.
In other words, I used SiteBuildIt! in the same way as I would expect a friend, relative or neighbor to use it...with no business or marketing knowledge or expertise.
To start out, I also decided not to choose a topic for my site that had anything to do with my professional life. I chose a topic about which I had a personal interest and a reasonable amount of knowledge.
That topic is coffee. I'm not obsessive about coffee, but I do like brewing good coffee and the whole topic of growing roasting, grinding and brewing coffee does interest me. And that's important, because when you build a web site you are going to have to learn and write a great deal about the topic you choose.
The site I built, using the SiteBuildIt! system and following their instructions step by step, is called CoffeeDetective.com.
Now, almost two years later, the site attracts about 50,000 visits a month and earns me between $2,000 and $4,000 a month, depending on the time of year. (I had no idea that the coffee business was so seasonal until I started work on this site.)
So I don’t make a living with this one site. But I really appreciate the extra income.
And while I put in a lot of hours building up new pages for the site during the early months, I now spend perhaps an hour a week on the site. And that one hour is enough to keep the site growing in popularity. So I anticipate my income increasing steadily for many years to come.
In fact, I can see no reason why the site shouldn't keep delivering the same level of income or more for many, many years. 10 years? 20 years? More?
And that's the magic of investing some spare time in building a web site that is designed to generate income. It's a bit like investing in a retirement fund, without the risks.
Sure, I put in a lot of time during many evenings and weekends back in 2006 and early 2007. And I didn't see any return on that time I spent for almost a year.
But now, and for the foreseeable future, that time spent is going to be paying me a very welcome monthly dividend.
And let me repeat, this has always been a part-time project, even during the early months. CoffeeDetective.com is the product of my spare time.
BTW, I don’t watch TV. So it's probably true to say that I spent my "TV time" building this site. (Hmmm...would you rather watch reruns of old reality shows, or build an online business that pays you an extra $20,000 - $40,000 a year?)
I know that some people with SiteBuildIt! sites earn a great deal more than I do. Others earn less. So neither I nor anyone else can predict the exact amount you can expect to make. But the system does have a remarkable track record.
Lastly, I want to repeat that I build this site simply by following instructions. I followed the recommended process, day by day. I built my site within a simple template and just "did as I was told". I also followed all the great advice that you will find in the SiteBuildIt! forum.
There's no magic here. It's a simple, proven process that can work for anyone.
Over the last year and a half I have written a number of articles about my experience with my SiteBuildIt! site. And I have more articles coming soon.
